ABNEY PARK’S End of Days crosses the musical map both chronologically and melodically; merging Rag-Time with Victoriana, and fusing Middle-Eastern melodies with Aboriginal Australian undercurrents. Still, there is cohesion. The album’s lyrics warn of the damaging effects of oppression and its many guises, but also tell of the hope of setting oneself free. Nathaniel’s skills are showcased as he draws notes on his violin as only he can. Daniel’s talent on the guitar is ever more revealed. Kristina gets her chance to shine, and Jody’s voice soars in perfect complement to Robert’s rich baritone. All the songs’ lyrics are brilliantly written. Their melodies only serve to enhance their messages. End of Days is at once danceable, and thought-provoking.
