Artist: Clara Engel

CD: "Secret Beasts"

Label: Self Released

--

Clara Engel's insturement of choice is her voice and you only need to listen to one song by Clara Engel to realize that she is a master of that instrument. Her newest collection, "Sacred Beasts", gives you thirteen songs to choose from but it doesn't matter what one you pick: they are all stunning.

At its most basic what Clara presents is a mix of cryptic pop and surreal jazz, like a heavier, more driven, alternative (reality) Julee Cruise. But Clara's voice isn't ethereal it is gloriously Earthly and real. And the range of tone she presents on "Sacred Beasts" is vast. From dry-lipped whispers to full-throttle roars, she is even capable of Diamanda Galás-worthy vocal acrobatics.

The finished product is both accessible and startling. It pulls you in and lulls you then *jolts* you to keep your attention focused. It's like a lovely house filled with ancient curious and sharp, unexpected corners.

A remarkably effective *and* affective recording.
