NYC's Copal play a blend of world music infused with a gypsy heart that should make any belly-dance lover smile.
If you imagine the Nathaniel Johnstone Trio minus the rock elements or took the work of Unwoman and replace the electronics with and international dance vibe you'd be on the right track. The end result is something akin to modern psychedelia, but with the intent being to set my soul soaring instead of blowing my mind.
Hannah Thiem's violin work takes center stage on these six tracks, which keeps the music focused despite the wide variety of influences. Normally song lengths of more than 7 minutes try my patience but these song are carefully composed (again by Thiem) so that they never get boring.
It I have a complaint about length it's not of individual songs, but of the collection itself. At just over 37 minutes the album feels a bit short and I keep wanting another track or two.
