Mr Rielly clearly knows his way around a wide variety of "Americana" (blues, zydeco, folk and the like) and he shows a fairly deft hand at turning these elements into very accessible pop music on his CD "Love Potions and Snake Oil".
The pieces found here remind me most of Lyle Lovett with a bit of Willie Nelson (minus the jazzisms).
There's a couple of really nice songs found on this recording: the zydeco jump of the opening track ("One of These Days (You're Gonna Realize)") and the and the wonderfully attitude driven "We're All Going Straight to Hell".
Overall the album is a good listen, but many of the songs just don't "stick to my ribs". I enjoy them when they're on but don't find myself humming them afterwards or driven to play them repeatedly. Perhaps the production is a bit too sweet for me and I'm craving something a bit more toothsome.
