If it's possible to fall in love with a CD I've done so with Eliza Rickman's "Gild the Lily".
This EP grabs my attention and draws me in every time I put it on, and I play it with Increasing Frequency.
The songs found on "Gild the Lily" are charming and warm with and undercurrent heartbreak and a riptide of melancholy. The strength and maturity of her voice echos that of the great Zoe Boekbinder, it's hard to believe that this voice comes from a woman so young.
Eliza picks the perfect counterpoint to her voice with her instrument of choice: toy piano. The fragile, almost brittle, sound of this keyboard accents and enriches the power of her voice. Beautiful.
It's hard to pick one song as my favorite, so I won't.
The run of "Over Cold Shoulders", "Cinnamon Bone" and "Black Rose" is unbeatable and these three songs together are worth the price of admission. The other three songs just add to the enjoymen like the cherry, whipped cream and sprinkles on a sundae.
