Sadly we couldn’t get out to London to catch this, but check out Helen Cox’ review from New Empress magazine:

“As for Jacques arrangement, it is in places haunting and in others downright harrowing. The stilted, jaunty beat played throughout the early fairground scenes particularly betray some hidden unease, perfectly relaying the dark undertow of Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz’s tale… This show is… a truly fascinating and unhinging experiment in silent film performance and well worth a look for film fans on the hunt for an alternative silent screen experience.”
And a 4 star review from Donald Hutera in The Times:

“Conjuring a mood of creeping, rancid melancholia, his music is a sustained, downbeat but spellbinding threnody of obsessive, looping instrumental rhythms and simple but vivid, enunciated language. But the treat that does the trick is the voice: angelically soothing, demonically harrowing or barking mad.”

Here’s an interview with Martyn on Run Riot:
“I don’t really like ‘talkies’. Silent films seem far more magical.
“I’ve always had a problem with authority!”

“I’m just an alienated 53 year old.”
