It’s always an unexpected pleasure to see Unto Ashes deliver another album into a world that never seems prepared for a further sonic entry from this most apocalyptic of bands. Over the years, and the various incarnations of the band, Unto Ashes has perfected a sublime blend of medieval dirge, neo-classical chanson, and death-folk; yet, while the touchstones of their sound—such as heavenly voices, archaic instrumentation, and orientalism—all gesture toward the past, one gets the sneaking suspicion that songs such as “Worms’-Meat,” “Night is Coming Soon,” and “Young Men Leave for Battles Unknown” provide more of a commentary on our present age than any forgotten era. And, as has become something of a tradition for Unto Ashes, on Burials Foretold they use musical alchemy to transform well-known songs such as Apoptygma Berzerk’s “Kathy’s Song” and Van Halen’s “Running with the Devil” into new melancholia. The new Dark Age is upon us!
