Miss Mamie and her crew play jazz/blues/vaudeville-as-miniature-big-band filled with attitude that can only be called SASS. To top it off there's so much sexuality running through their debut CD I'm surprised my computer didn't catch a-fire when I played it.
I've been waiting 3 (!) years for this recording and it does not disappoint.
Like any good party band (be they jazz, pop, funk or what have you) Miss Mamie Lavona the Exotic Mulatta and her White Boy Band manage to *sound* loose while playing incredibly tight. This instills the music with an urgency and a professionalism that keeps your attention glued to their performance even while your hips shake to the sounds they bump and hustle at you. Their music is rounded out with a full-bodied soul that can only be called bawdy.
Style-wise the band has their jazz/blues/boho look ~down~. As soon as they take the stage you know where they're coming from and the straight up, well, HOTNESS of Miss Mamie herself makes you want to pack a bag and run away to join their seductive sideshow.
All of this, of course, would be meaningless if the band couldn't play.
But, by god, they can. The band play with such a confidence and ease that you never stop and think about their playing. It's just good, and you know it with out having to ponder it.
And DAMN can Miss Mamie sing. Pipes to die for I tell you.
