Artist: Thomas Nöla et son Orchestre

LP/CD: "The Rose-Tinted Monocle"

Label: Disques de Lapin

--

Thomas Nöla has assembled his Orchestre for another round of mad scientist rock/twisted pop.

Not mad scientist is regards to lyrical content, these tracks aren't the tales of beakers and beasts brought to life, but mad scientist in that you can just imagine Nöla slaving over these songs in a strange, darkened chamber... alone, but driven, a crazed look in his eyes. Orchestre or no, "The Rose-Tinted Monocle" is the creation of a twisted genius intent on following his madness and muse even if it means the release of a monster on the world.

So be it, "The Rose-Tinted Monocle" is a wondrous monster, a Chimera cobbled together from disparate elements like sixties garage rock, disturbed pop, circus waltzes (especially on the title track) and macabaret (check out "Mon Petite Bete Noire"). Thomas reveals an anarchic soul on these songs. The truth of them will out, genre be damned. There's less of the Swans grind that was found on his (excellent) previous recording "¡Vanity is a Sin!", but the most likely reference point for new listeners remains Nick Cave.

The comparison to Cave is superficial, after all if you were locked in a room with Nick he'd probably just nod off or, at the most, kill you. With Mr Nöla you get the impression that death is the least sick thing he has in mind for you.

I really enjoyed this album, but I'm a sucker for the occasional flourishes of hammond organ and trumpet.

Comes as a lovely pink LP with a CD or digital download included (your make the call!) and, of course, a rose-tinted monocle.
