Smoke Fairies are one of those few bands that if you hear a bit of their background you know exactly what you're in for.
Katherine and Jessica are two women from Sussex with amazingly harmonized voices who spent a good deal of time exploring the American south (Appalachia and New Orleans).
The end result is exactly what you'd expect: a fusion of British and American roots music that is best described as Madrigal Blues, an updating of 60s baroque folk (think Fairport Convention) but with a rawer nerve to the work and a backroads authenticity.
The music isn't so much dark as it is shaded, late afternoon sounds that are never too melancholy.
These songs are beautifully unrushed, the compositions so laid back they're seductive.
