Wovenhand is the current project by former 16 Horsepower leader David Eugene Edwards and "Ten Stones" is the fourth full length this project has released... and it's stunning!
Edwards is still on the religious vision quest he started with 16 Horsepower and it remains one that is both hopeful and apocalyptic. The songs on "Ten Stones" combine fire & brimstone folk with haunted plains guitar to driving rock to create the perfect vehicle for David's rural noir story spinning. The results are riveting.
The pieces presented on this CD cover a goodly amount of ground from the intimate and charming ("Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars"), to the unnerving ("Kingdom of Ice"), to the the driving (the world tinged "Kicking Bird"). Even a song with a the title "Behold the Lamb" pulsates with menace.
The production here is top-notch. Unlike many of the 16 Horsepower studio recordings the sound here hasn't been softened, the production layers everything beautifully with out ever sacrificing the grit and determination of the performance.
