Zaz (aka Isabelle Geffroy) is a rising star with a beautiful and expressive voice who has been crafty enough to marry that voice to music that blends sultry french cabaret-gypsy-jazz to a modern pop/R&B sensibility. The results are a powerful gumbo that seduces my ear whenever a tune starts.
Some songs found on this debut (which has finally found it's way to the States) are more mellow and soulful than others. And while I like these heartfelt pieces Zaz and her crew really burn it up when they get swinging in full gear.
There's a real chance of this French talent becoming a huge international hit, though her preference for singing in her native tongue may run into the USA's chauvanism against those who don't condescend to sing in English. Which is really too bad for Americans as this is a catchy and addictive album that is appealing on every level.
